Assistant Chief Brinkmeyer was returning from a disturbance call on October 29, 1939, when a taxi driver offered him a ride to the Middletown police station. While on Central Avenue, a vehicle driven by a 28-year-old Middletown resident ran a stop sign at Clinton Street and the two vehicles collided at 2:20 a.m. Assistant Chief Brinkmeyer was seriously injured and rushed to the Middletown Hospital where he died fifteen hours later.
Assistant Chief Brinkmeyer was survived by his wife, Katherine, and two children, Helen (37) and Robert (34). He was buried in Woodside Cemetery on November 1, 1939.
