On January 25, 2005, while responding to a call involving a suicidal man, Sergeant Cochran’s patrol car encountered an icy patch on State Road 48 and slid into a concrete wall.  Sergeant Cochran was thrown from the vehicle.  He succumbed to the injuries on the next day, January 26, 2005.

During a 1983 gun battle in Aurora, Sergeant Cochran survived being shot.  During 2002, he exposed corruption in his police department.  He was survived by his wife, Jo’Nee K. (41), two sons, three daughters, and four grandchildren.  His funeral, one of the largest ever seen in Dearborn County, was held at Lawrenceburg High School.  He was buried on January 31, 2005, in Riverview Cemetery, Aurora.
