Late at night, on August 28, 1918, Patrolman Deiters, of 2139 Loth Street, questioned two males at the corner of Liberty Street and Freeman Avenue. One of them, 19-year-old Ludie Clifford Shelton, pulled a firearm and shot Patrolman Deiters in the chin, stomach, and through the pericardium. He was rushed to General Hospital and Shelton was arrested.
Patrolman Deiters died on August 29, 1918, at General Hospital. He was survived by his wife, Sarah, one of two sons, Howard, a daughter, Marien, and his mother, Rose. Patrolman Deiters was buried in Carthage Road Cemetery (now Vine Street Hill Cemetery). Sarah lost her other son in 1947. She died at 78 in 1960 leaving her daughter and a granddaughter, Antoinette Cianciolo.
Shelton was convicted in the murder and electrocuted on January 26, 1923, 4½ years after the murder, becoming the first person executed for the murder of a Cincinnati Police Officer.
