On August 29, 1982, Chief Elder, while responding to a disturbance at a local hotel or on the way home after housing two prisoners, accidentally drove his patrol car off the roadway.  The car overturned and Chief Elder was killed.

Chief Elder was survived by his wife and two children.  He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mason.
