Patrolman Grubb, of 1016 Ludlow and a U.S. Army WWI veteran, was on special duty at a New Year's Eve dance at the Eagles Temple on South Second Street in the early morning of January 1, 1935. A member of the dance committee took a gun from Elmer Adams (30), an Illinois parolee, local hoodlum, and suspect in two burglaries from a few hours before. Patrolman Grubb searched Adams and found a second gun. About 3 a.m., Patrolmen Urban Leugers, patrol driver, and Henry Hart, responded to take Adams to the station. Patrolmen Hart and Grubb sat in the back seat with Adams. Near the intersection of South Second and Ludlow streets, Adams pulled a third gun and shot Patrolman Grubb four times and Patrolman Hart once. Patrolman Leugers shot Adams three times, killing him.
Patrolmen Grubb and Hart were taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. Patrolman Grubb died en route from one bullet that entered his chest and went through his lungs. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:30 a.m.
Patrolman Grubb left a wife, Esther. He was buried in River View Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana on January 4, 1935.
