Deputy Grubbs and Sheriff Arch Voit, on June 2, 1943, went to a farm on Indiana State Highway No. 40 to arrest a tenant who was suspected in the shooting of the farm’s owner. When Deputy Grubbs reached into the back seat to retrieve a twelve-gauge shotgun, it discharged striking him in the right chest. Sheriff Voit took him immediately to Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, but he died en route.
Deputy Grubbs was survived by his new wife, Ellen, and two children, Alice Jean and Sidney Allen. His first wife, Bonnie, had died one year before. He was also survived by his twin brother who was, at the time, serving in the Army in World War II. Deputy Grubbs. He was buried in Gibson Cemetery in Bright on June 6, 1943.
